The Glowworm caves – er… of course! Can anyone even say Waitomo and not think of glowworms? Didn’t think so. You have run through them but there is so, so much more to see here – get yourself set for a tour of the underground and take in these sights at a more sedate pace!
The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company
If you are up for more of a physical, and wet, experience but a fantastic way to get up close and personal with glowworms then this is a must do. Don the wetsuit, headlamp and inflatable and prepare for a cool journey by river through some of the caves that make Waitomo world famous.
The longest guided underground tour in New Zealand, this 2 hour experience will leave you spellbound. A marvellous cave system showcasing some spectacular underground waterfalls and natural formations.
King Country Brewing Company
So much adrenaline will make you thirsty. Based in the heart of Waitomo, King Country Brewing are a small team of passionate brewers making small batches of tasty, tasty beer. You can sample their wares at any number of cafes and bars around the area but specifically The HuHu Cafe and Tomo Bar and Eatery both in Waitomo. Perfect post race healing.
Otorohanga Kiwi House
Well worth a visit with the family en route to or from your race weekend the Kiwi House in Otorohanga is a wonderful animal park just 15 minutes drive from Waitomo. Amazing array of Kiwi native birds and some tuatara. Great efforts on their part in bird conservation so go swot up and watch the kids get stoked.
Wonderful cave system in Waitomo that has a great colony of Wetas. A beautiful place with a long established history with Maori myths and legends abounding. A short walk from where you celebrate overcoming the challenge of your run!
The Timber Trail
Need more physical exertions? Alright, then. Check out the Timber Trail only 20 minutes from Waitomo. 87KM of amazing trails through stunning ancient forest with some killer bridges. If you’re on a week’s holiday visiting the area The Timber Trail is well worth researching.
